Through a strong working partnership with assigned business locations, the Safety Specialist takes all steps necessary to ensure the safety of the company personnel and assets are in compliance with legislative requirements. You will perform an accomplished level of responsibilities in the following areas: Occupational health and safety, risk assessment, disability management, JHSC, audits, safe driving, dangerous goods, Canada Labour Code Part II and WHIMIS.  We will also regularly assess your ability to bring the team coffee and baked goods. Part of that is providing leadership and guidance (and your baked goods) to junior staff as well as education to managers and employees.

  • ·Develop, communicate and monitor initiatives to promote a safe working environment in accordance with all Canadian safety/environmental legislation/regulations and corporate requirements
  • ·Lead in planning, researching, developing, analyzing and implementing safety strategies to reduce workplace injuries and accidents
  • ·Prepare presentations and make recommendations to specific regional management
  • ·Determine the safety requirements of all assigned business locations
  • ·Lead the implementation of comprehensive safety related plans and programs to address these requirements
  • ·Identify actual and potential risk or liability to the corporation, advising management and recommending/developing corrective action
  • ·Research and resolve workplace safety matters
  • ·Maintain positive working relations with internal and external providers
  • ·Be able to discuss all seasons of Game of Thrones or House of Cards – bonus points for both

Tired yet? Good because you also will:

  • ·Liaise with various authorities and groups (Transport Canada, Labour Canada (ESDC), Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, Ministry of Environment and Energy, WCB, vendors, etc.) on behalf of FedEx Express
  • ·Represent FedEx during external audits, inspections, hearings, at meetings, and seminars
  • ·Lead the development and ensures consistency of company policies, programs and procedures including those related to regulatory compliance
  • ·Be the SME (that’s a FedEx acronym for Subject Matter Expert so be ready to be called a SME, it’s complement honestly) of legislated requirements, taking a lead role in establishing internal standards including consulting with the Safety Advisor as required

Whew, that’s a lot – so what do you hope you have to do all of this? How about…

  • ·A Bachelor's Degree or Equivalent, Health, Safety, Environment/Human Resources related is preferred
  • ·Professional accreditation (CRSP, CHRP) plus 4 years of experience and WHMIS certified
  • ·Strong working knowledge of the Canada Labour Code Part II, IATA and TDG Dangerous Goods Regulations, Workers Compensation Legislation, Behavioural Based Safety, and Injury Prevention. Building codes and fire codes is desirable – as is wearing a decoder ring
  • An understanding of disability is an asset   
  • ·Diversified professional expertise in the majority of these areas; Occupational Health and Safety, Workers Compensation, Dangerous Goods, Fire Prevention, Vehicle or Driving safety
  • ·Sound understanding of government legislation and the interpretation and application of constantly changing and evolving legislation to company total reward programs/ policies.
  • ·Excellent presentation, communication (written & verbal) & human relations skills
  • ·Strong analytical, statistical & organizational skills
  • ·Strong investigative skills – a Sherlock Holmes hat is optional but encouraged
