The Technical Principal – Office of the CTO is a senior technical leadership role responsible for supporting the Chief Technology Officer in the execution of strategic technology priorities across FedEx. This position operates at the intersection of technology strategy, enterprise architecture, engineering, and program execution, providing technical leadership and oversight for complex, enterprise-wide initiatives.

The Technical Principal is responsible for translating strategic priorities into executable technical plans, establishing appropriate governance and execution mechanisms, monitoring progress against key milestones, and identifying technical, architectural, and delivery risks that may affect business outcomes.

Working across Technology Platform and Infrastructure and in partnership with senior technology leaders, this position provides the CTO with objective visibility into the health, progress, dependencies, and risks associated with critical technology initiatives. The role also facilitates alignment across multiple technology functions and provides technical leadership to resolve complex issues that span organizational or architectural boundaries.

This position requires significant technical depth, sound judgment, and the ability to operate effectively with senior executives, architects, engineering leaders, program leaders, and cross-functional stakeholders.


Essential Functions

Strategic Technology Execution

  • Support the CTO in translating strategic technology priorities into clearly defined technical objectives, execution plans, milestones, and measurable outcomes.
  • Provide technical leadership and execution oversight for strategic enterprise technology initiatives.
  • Establish and maintain mechanisms to assess progress against approved technical roadmaps, delivery commitments, architectural standards, and business objectives.
  • Evaluate execution plans and technical approaches to identify gaps, dependencies, resource constraints, and potential barriers to successful delivery.
  • Partner with accountable technology leaders to develop appropriate mitigation and recovery plans when execution risks or variances are identified.

Program Governance and Execution Assurance

  • Establish and maintain technical governance and program health mechanisms for high-priority technology programs and capital initiatives.
  • Monitor program milestones, technical dependencies, architectural decisions, performance indicators, and execution risks.
  • Identify significant schedule, technical, architectural, capacity, or dependency variances and escalate issues requiring executive attention.
  • Facilitate resolution of complex technical and cross-functional dependencies that span multiple organizations or technology domains.
  • Assess whether strategic technology initiatives remain aligned with established objectives, architectural direction, and expected business outcomes.

Enterprise Architecture and Technical Leadership

  • Provide senior-level technical guidance on architecture, engineering, infrastructure, application development, modernization, security, and other enterprise technology matters.
  • Evaluate proposed technical approaches and identify architectural implications, tradeoffs, dependencies, scalability considerations, and enterprise impacts.
  • Partner with enterprise architects and engineering leaders to promote consistency with established architectural principles, technology standards, and strategic direction.
  • Provide independent technical analysis to support significant technology decisions and investments.
  • Assist in resolving complex technical issues that require coordination across multiple teams, platforms, or organizational boundaries.

Executive Reporting and Decision Support

  • Develop concise, data-driven reporting that provides visibility into the health and execution of strategic technology initiatives.
  • Prepare executive-level scorecards, dashboards, briefings, decision materials, and technical assessments for the CTO and other senior leadership forums.
  • Synthesize complex technical and program information into clear findings, risks, options, and decision points.
  • Identify emerging trends, systemic risks, and execution patterns across the technology portfolio that may require leadership attention.
  • Provide timely and objective information to support executive decision-making and prioritization.

Cross-Functional Leadership

  • Serve as a senior technical liaison between the Office of the CTO and technology organizations responsible for strategic enterprise initiatives.
  • Build effective working relationships across Digital Content, Business Readiness, Information Security International, Architecture, Application Development, Regional/Field IT, Enterprise Modernization, and other applicable technology functions.
  • Facilitate alignment among technical leaders and stakeholders when initiatives require coordination across multiple organizations.
  • Influence technical direction and execution through subject-matter expertise, collaboration, and effective communication.
  • Represent the Office of the CTO in designated technical, architecture, governance, and program forums, as appropriate.


Minimum Qualifications


Minimum Education

Bachelor's Degree in computer science, engineering, information systems, or related field, and/or equivalent.


Minimum Experience

Requires five (5) years equivalent work experience in information technology or engineering environment.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Skilled at leading/assisting In the resolution of complex production problems.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Extensive experience leading or providing technical oversight for complex, enterprise-scale technology initiatives.
  • Demonstrated expertise in enterprise architecture, software engineering, infrastructure, cloud technologies, application modernization, or related technology disciplines.
  • Experience working across large, matrixed technology organizations and coordinating initiatives involving multiple technical domains.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess complex technical programs, identify execution risks, and develop actionable recommendations.
  • Experience preparing and presenting technical information, recommendations, and program health assessments to senior executives.
  • Strong executive communication, stakeholder management, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to influence outcomes across organizational boundaries without direct authority.
  • Demonstrated ability to balance strategic objectives with technical feasibility, execution requirements, risk, and business priorities.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Advanced knowledge of enterprise technology architecture and engineering principles.
  • Strong understanding of large-scale technology program execution, governance, and risk management.
  • Ability to evaluate complex technical architectures, dependencies, and implementation approaches.
  • Ability to synthesize large amounts of technical and operational information into clear executive-level insights.
  • Strong business acumen with the ability to connect technology decisions to operational and business outcomes.
  • Excellent written, verbal, presentation, and executive communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a highly matrixed, global organization.
  • Ability to manage multiple high-priority initiatives and operate effectively in an environment of changing business and technology priorities.

Domicile

This is a hybrid position located in Pittsburgh, PA, Memphis, TN, or Plano TX. Candidates must live within 50 miles of the campus location. Employees will be required to work at the FedEx campus location several times per week.
