Job description:

As a FedEx Technical Fellow you will play an important role in designing, building, automating and deploying scalable and secure public cloud infrastructure. Our product is the FedEx Cloud Platform where the Platform Engineering team manage public cloud landing zones of PaaS (based on Azure Kubernetes Service), IaaS and Data Analytics.

Our goal is to architect and deploy an end-to-end global FedEx Cloud Platform empowering developers with ideal tooling, streamlined processes, and innovative accelerators to achieve rapid value delivery in the Azure public cloud.

Providing benefits of a globally distributed, yet simplified cloud environment, enabling an optimal developer experience and seamless path to production whilst providing the ability to securely release on demand with observability, reliability,  
cost efficiency, and compliance.

Key responsibilities:

  • Set the technical vision and roadmap for cloud platform evolution, ensuring alignment with FedEx enterprise architecture and business priorities.
  • Influence cloud adoption strategy, guiding key decisions on platform architecture, tooling, and vendor choices across public cloud providers (Azure, GCP, OCI)
  • Drive platform governance, including defining guardrails, compliance standards, and cost optimization strategies in collaboration with Security, Architecture, and Finance teams.
  • Serve as a cloud subject matter expert (SME) and trusted advisor to executives, engineering leaders, and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Champion platform standardization and modernization, advocating for use of internal frameworks, IaC practices, and self-service models.
  • Mentor and upskill senior engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and technical depth across the organization.
  • Evaluate emerging cloud-native technologies, assessing their maturity, feasibility, and alignment with business needs.
  • Prototype new capabilities, test PoCs (proof-of-concepts), and transition successful innovations into production-ready services.
  • Engage with enterprise security, networking, data, and operations teams to ensure platform design aligns with enterprise policies and SLA requirements.
  • Act as the senior strategic leader driving cloud-native infrastructure and technical innovation.

 

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Understanding of cloud infrastructure concepts (network, storage, OS, virtualization, containerization)
  • Experience with Azure, AWS, GCP or OCI
  • Experience managing cloud-based Kubernetes Clusters
  • Extensive knowledge of container technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes, preferably Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS)
  • Knowledge of RedHat Enterprise Linux and other distributed Linux systems
  • Experience in scripting/programming languages (e.g. Bash, JavaScript, Java, NodeJS, Go, Spring Boot, TypeScript)
  • Strong experience in declarative “infrastructure as code” scripting language, preferably Terraform
  • Ability to establish and maintain relationships with key stakeholders with an appreciation of and focus on customer needs
  • Experience working in cross-functional platform teams
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to explain cloud concepts to senior stakeholders
  • Establishing relationships and maintaining contains with people from a variety of backgrounds
  • Previous experience of database technologies (Azure Postgres, SQL, MongoDB, Azure Cosmos, Cassandra, DataStax)
  • Develops initiatives, proposals and business cases within area of expertise. Acts as subject matter expert and shares knowledge with peers and management.
